Palace House and the old abbey ruins can be found a short distance away from the National Motor Museum, just one of Beaulieu's claims to fame, founded by Lord Montagu in 1952 in memory of his father, the 2nd Lord Montague.
The house has been home to the family since 1538, it was acquired following the Dissolution of the Monasteries. It is an attractive building, showing a combination of three styles. Originally, it was begun in the 14th-century as the gatehouse to the abbey. It was altered in 1730 by the 2nd Duke, and in the 19th-century the house was extended to reflect a Scottish baronial home by Henry, Ist Baron Montague of Beaulieu, who employed noted architect Sir Arthur Blomfield. At this time the house was largely used as a backdrop for lavish entertainment and hunting parties.
Today, the parts of the house open to the public show well its former monastic glory, however amid the splendour visitors feel the warmth of a house which is the very epitome of country style, charm and elegance. There is much Victorian decoration, beautiful furniture and memorable ancestral portraits amongst a rich array of family treasures collected over several centuries.
Palace House is still lived in by Lord Montagu and his family, who occupy an apartment in the Victorian wing of this spectacular house which captures the eye and fires the imagination with its unique confection of towers, turrets and tall chimney pots.
Set in the beautiful countryside of the New Forest National Park, with the Beaulieu River crossing the estate, Palace House offers visitors the opportunity of experiencing a gorgeous historic home, the romantic ruins of a former Cistercian abbey and the joy of a cavalcade of vintage vehicles in the close-by National Motor Museum
